So, the new semester and new academic year is upon us. I hope you all had a nice, relaxing summer (pause for laughter from current PGs). To all our old hands, welcome back; to all our newbies ... WELCOME TO EDINBURGH CLASSICS!
We (that is to say Alana and Jen) feel the need to provide some comforting words at the start of this new stage in your life, and to tell you all about life here and what we, as postgrad reps, have in store for you.
Firstly, DON'T PANIC! This applied to current students too (you know who you are). If you have any questions, queries, concerns or moments of crisis then feel free to contact either of us, we are more than happy to help, whether it is in how to find a book, to just needing a shoulder to blub into while someone gives you hot chocolate and tells you "do not worry, my supervisor did that to me in my first meeting too; it happens to everyone."
Secondly, we will both be at the Freshers Week meeting, there to answer your questions and introduce our good selves to your good selves. We will also be at the wine reception later on. We will also be holding a classics meet-up early in the semester with food (and more wine).
Thirdly, our famous, world-renowned, classics postgraduate seminar series. These take place every Thursday from week 3. They are a chance for you to practice your presenting skills, air ideas and hear what everyone else is up to. Informal, relaxed and highly productive, these seminars are a vital part of life in the classics department, and always end in a trip to a pub. More details to follow, but if you want to present then just e-mail us at [email protected].
We think that is it for now, but we look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you better over the year.
Best wishes,
Alana and Jen
