'The A.G. Leventis Foundation was established in May 1979 as a result of provisions made by Anastasios G. Leventis, who died in October 1978. From the beginning, the aim of the Foundation has been to support educational, cultural, artistic and philanthropic causes in Cyprus , Greece and elsewhere. In 1997 the Foundation endowed a chair for a biennial Visiting Research Professorship in Classical Greek to be based in Classics, School of History, Classics and Archaeology, University of Edinburgh . The purpose of the Chair is to contribute to the understanding of classical Greece, its literature, history and people. One of the main responsibilities of the Professor, while in residence, is to arrange a conference resulting in publication.
The Leventis Professor in 2011 is Professor Ruth Scodel (Michigan), whose conference is entitled 'What is Greek about Ancient Greek Narrative'. The conference will be held from 27-30 October 2011, in the Playfair Library, University of Edinburgh.
